Though stifled and trapped in their worlds.

Yesterday, I watched Lipstick Under My Burkha, a film about four Bhopali women who do not repress their desires, and I was amazed how another movie from three decades ago, leapt across time, space and language to talk to LUMB. Adaminte Variyellu (Adam's Rib) was a 1983 Malayalam film by KG George telling the story of three women from three different strata in society and their struggle to break free. It was a pathbreaking film in Malayalam that seamlessly intertwined three separate stories into a single narrative and even earned commercial success.

Alice is the wife of a rich and ruthless contractor, a mother of two adolescents, and is dauntless in her pursuit of an affair with a younger man. Vasanthi is a working woman who must put up with an overbearing mother in law, an indifferent husband, and struggle amidst her daily chores to find affection for her daughter from a loveless marriage. Ammini is an abused domestic maid in Alice's house, and ends up in a shelter home for women.

Alice and Vasanthi succumb to the pressures, one finding escape in suicide and another in madness, but Ammini of the working class gives a rousing call to others like her to break out of the chains, stigma and claustrophobia of the shelter home. Aadaminte Variyellu is by no means judgmental about the choices of the three women but is tempting for us as viewers and reviewers to surmise how the three women responded to the challenges in their life.

Burkha

LUMB, is certainly not a bleak portray of women and uses humour and sexuality without pulling any punches to titillate, shock and shame our conservative society. It's Buaji is a middle-aged widow who has the hots for a young man and is hooked to erotic pulp fiction. Shireen is an ace saleswoman but must do it on the sly and is set back every night by her brutish husband who makes sex and babies but not love. Rehana has been frocked in a burkha but she loves the good life: jeans, cigarettes, lipstick, music, boyfriends, and must steal and lie her way to get there. Leela has flighty ambitions but needs her photographer boyfriend as a crutch to meet her sexual cravings and the lure of Delhi but life gets complicated by an arranged marriage that threatens to shackle her.

The similarities and the differences in the two films stayed with me as I lulled myself to sleep in the company of these seven fascinating women. All seven desire something: freedom. Sexuality is understated or non-existent in Adaminte Variyellu. In LUMB we have women struggling with their sexual desires. Thirty years is a long time in Indian cinema. LUMB was directed by a woman, Alankrita Srivastava. We still have a censor board but when women come forward to tell the story of other women, even the censor with his power to enforce decency and morality is faced with a dilemma: would I become antiquated if I do not clear this film? Apparently 27 scenes were cut for screening, but the version I saw on Amazon Prime didn't appear to be chopped.

Finally, Adaminte Variyellu and LUMB talked to me profoundly in the way they ended, quite similar yet very different. In Adaminte Variyellu, Ammini leads other women out of a dark, closed and cramped space to highlight the fraternity and liberation of the women. Moreover, the film leaves no room for questions on the fate of its three protagonists. In LUMB, four women estranged from society consorts in a small, dark room. Have they withdrawn into a shell? Will they make peace and conform or will the next morning see these women break out and resume their rebellions?

From 1983 to 2016, there is one common thread: women are enlarging their personal spaces and claiming their rights. The way both films end suggests the fight is easier when alliances are formed among women. But do these solidarities form among women in the real world? Redsnow 0.9 3. Or is that just a fictional prop to bring stories to compelling endings?
